Posting from it right now. Cool in a a lot of ways, clumsy in others. It will take me a few days to have a good take on it. I wonder if I'll adjust to the keyboard spacing as I think that is the big issue with typing right now.

The korg electribe app seems pretty much insane for making beats.

The display is great but after seeing the iPhone 4 retina display it's not so impressive. You know that future generations will have pixel density like the retina display and so this seems instantly outdated in a way. That said it's still a sick ips display that is better than the majority of computer displays out there now.

Yes. Flipboard seems to be overloaded right now so I can't connect it to my Twitter. What ive seen of the app looks nice though.

Flipboard is working better now. I was able to connect it to my Twitter and it's a pretty sweet way to browse the feed. It expands short tweets with links out into article previews so you get a better idea of what the link is about than if you just read Twitter the normal way. Makes me want to follow more people.

I kind of doubt there will be a retina display equivalent for a few revisions the more I think about it. To get that level of pixel density at this scale would require an insane resolution and then the processing power needs to be bumped up enough to handle rendering and the visual effects at that huge res (or maybe I misunderstand how much power that requires?). Anyway I bet they add camera etc next.

nice. i think it's a pretty good/important thing for people doing web stuff to have access to. but, i'm starting to think it's a little crazy how many non-computer devices there are now to think about (iphone, ipad, android, eventual google tablet, microsoft's upcoming tablet, etc). it's going to be hard to cover all the bases. i've been thinking of trying to get an android phone without service (use only wifi) just so i can familiarize myself better with it. oof.

yeah the Facebook app looks to be iphone only right now. i reactivated my account in order to check it out but then i could only find the iphone version. kind of strange that such a popular service isn't all over an ipad specific version especially given the strengths of the iPad for casual users.

Trak what did the iPhone cost you? Also I'm assuming you researched NZ carriers for data plan etc? What will your monthly carrier cost be? Just curious to see how it compares.

in other news the battery life on the iPad is quite good, but it takes sooooo long to charge up. i mean i understand that the battery capacity is probably pretty large - hence the good battery life - but the charge time seems out of proportion compared to the rate that my other devices (iphone, macbook) charge. i found this article explaining the slow charging issue, but even when i use the wall charger it's still slower than i would expect http://news.yahoo.com/s/ytech_wguy/20100405/tc_ytech_wguy/ytech_wguy_tc1460

I also got the 2 year extended warranty.
After I ordered, I re-read the iPhone 4 thread on here and saw that it's a waste of money uggh! I was hoping that if my battery lost it's ability to hold a charge i could get it replaced after 1.5 years etc

iPhones sold in NZ are not locked to a carrier, we have 3 to choose from
I am gonna put my work SIM into it, so the voice and data will be free
But I think my boss will put me on the $10/month for 100MB data plan :(

100MB might not be that bad. What happens if you go over?

I don't even think about it as I have unlimited data but even still this is my usage from the last several months (there was a lengthy power outage from a storm in March, hence the spike there):



Most of my usage is when I'm in range of wifi though so I may not be a typical case. Usually if I'm using it away from home it's just to look something up quickly or maybe download an album off itunes if I'm dying to hear something in the car.

Yeah the price I don't really want to talk about... it's a ridiculous amount to dump on tech that evolves so rapidly. I can't believe I held out this long (till the 4th gen) to get one, I am impressed with my will power.

It's good to see Android catching up and keeping Apple honest.

Thanks for posting your usage, it's a relief to see you can get away with ~100MB a month. If you go over that limit here, it goes to a redonk rate, but in theory my work's paying so I don't care unless my boss calls me into his office. But it's a 2 way thing, he really wants me to be permanently contactable so it's win-win for me to buy the phone (work wouldn't) and work to pay the usage.

My friend at work reckons 100MB is enough!!!
I guess it's not home ADSL and torrent downloading...I would have on WiFi at work and home. Really just using the 3G for map/directions and emergency surfing

Yeah I think if I were careful I could easily keep it under 100MB no problem. As I said I've never even thought about it and I'm not averaging much more than 100 on 3G.

so back to that Flud iPad app, it looks like it might have a nice interface but it's just an RSS reader with facebook (and no twitter) sharing apparently, and that isn't really up my alley.

yeah especially after the splash Flipboard made with their PR (driven by their connections) i bet there will be a lot of that kind of thing.

these guys need to stop worrying about the PR and make a killer app that people really want.
