This rich, dark, and enthralling Bock is refreshing and drinks so easily that one would never suspect that it weighs in at 7.2% a.b.v. If you appreciate Aventinus, try Der Weisse Bock.

sipping Gambrinus pilsner from Plzen (brewed by Pilsner Urquell). Not exactly the best of Czech pilseners but OK. I prefer an Urquell or Kozel.

I like Gambrinus. My favorite Czech beer is Czech Budvar, then Kozel, then Urquell and finally Gambrinus. I don't like Velvet or the other dark brews.

Last beer of bierfest weekend ..

" Golden amber colour with a thin white head. Bready aroma with toffee, grass in the hops, dandelion, some more distant banana, light fruit. Mouthfeel is full, slightly thick on the tongue. Flavour is intially full of caramel and bread in the malt with more dandelion and floral type hop flavours leading to sweet fruit: cherry and grape. Finish is long and slightly sweet."

busy day .. unwinding Weizla style.

"Pours a hazy golden with a small coating of white head. Aroma of lightly sweet wheat with lots of citrus and mild clove. Body starts fairly full with a nice, light sweetness and good banana clove complexity with a balanced, bready yeasty finish. A nice Hefeweizen"

"Pours a light golden with a medium white head- some lace clear and moderate carbonation. Aroma is grassy herbal with mineral, crackery malts, light pils, mostly fresh overall with some hay as well. Flavor is light toast, light pils malt, grassy with light herbal hops, green and vegetal bitterness in the back of the throat, and a bit prickly- almost too clean and refined no soft pils malts or light wisp of ester- just cracker and light toast and light herbal hops. Easy drinking but a bit mineraly and grassy."

"A delighful German pils! Pours a pale yellow color with a rocky white head right out of a magazine ad. It’s got a grassy sweet aroma with a subtle hint of the malts. This is very soft in the mouth and has sweet grasses and malts for a flavor. The best part is the surprizingly aggressive hop bite right at the end. This delivers a clean, crisp finish. It’s definitely an all-night-long kind of a beer."

I love how people can write about beer.

"It pours a beautiful hazy copper beer with impurities floating. Beautiful creamy, nicely lasting, decent sized head. A huge amount of rose in the nose... accompanied by blood orange, faint fennel, aniseed and a great amount of hop resin- very impressive and inviting. Grainy. Atypical for the style. The taste doesn’t quite match the aroma. Sweet, perhaps too sweet, in any case to my liking but luckily balanced out by a really nice hop profile and a good bitterness. A lot of hop resin in the finish which is reminiscent of grapefruit and blood orange. A very good heller bock with plenty of character. "

"Pours a clear straw gold with a 1 finger, creamy, white head. Aroma is grass, grainy malt, straw, cereal, and hints of tree fruit. Flavor is sweet malt and heavy cereal grain up front, leading to planty honey, grass, dry straw, bamboo shoots and toast. Palate is suprisingly thick and pretty creamy on entry a little slick in the middle and neutral to dry finish. Nice summer quencher."

Flavor is bready and I detected a buttery quality initially with a hint of cloves, apricot and chocolate. Needs a bit more fruit to be balanced though. Nice creamy palate. interesting..."

mine tasted a bit sour, but perhaps it was because the beer was a bit over date

"Amber orange color. No head at all. Aroma of malt, yeast, nuts, oranges. Medium to heavy body, almost flat. Dry, hoppy flavor, medium malt. Not much sweetness or malt depth. Nutty. Dry, bittering finish, relatively long lasting. Very interesting, dry keller bier. With the yeast sediment added, it takes on a bit more interesting flavor, slightly more malty a a touch of sweetness, although just a touch."

It's OK but i'm not a kellerbier fanboy

Aromas of caramel. pears, peaches, strawberries, fresh bread, quite earthy. Flavours of malts, plums, coriander, cinammon, cloves, banana, caramel. Sweet, malty finish. Nice."

Pours a slightly hazy orang/golden color. Moderate off-white head with decent lacing through finish. Aroma of cascade hops, citrus, and malts. Well-balanced beer with a good dry finish. A classic pale ale

I love this beer!

that's cool you can get that over there. i'm not sure of the history but that seems to be one of the first widely available american craft beers that i can remember. i know i had it in college a lot around 1991 or so.

according to wikipedia: "Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale is the second best-selling craft beer in the United States, behind the Boston Beer Company's Samuel Adams Boston Lager."

can you get Samuel Adams over there? i'm always curious about the distribution.

I know There is a company in amsterdam that imports beer from
Anchor Brewing Company, Flying Dog Brewery, Great Divide Brewing Company, F.X. Matt Brewing Company and Left Hand Brewing. I Guess they also import Sierra Nevada Brewing beers now. Are these all still independent breweries or part of one of the big guys?
All these beers are hard to find in the Netherlands, but my local 'beer shop' is selling them now. I think they are testing to see if these will sell. The importer probably made them some introductory deal or something. I live in a small town and I think there will not be enough business to keep selling them. About Pale Ale, you don't get that a lot in the netherlands. You have beer that is referred to as Amber or "Spéciale belge" which is brewed the same way : Palm Speciale, De Koninck

I thought i'd try some Saranac beer today.
The Pale Ale, India Pale Ale and Black Forest
The Pale Ale was nice but nothing special.
I liked the India Pale Ale best.
The Black Forrest had a metalic taste that made my teeth hurt, did not enjoy it that much.

yeah Saranac is ok but nothing of theirs that i've tried is particularly great. that's cool they have distribution over there though. as for that metallic taste i wonder if that was due to storage issues (like if it was chilled at one point, then allowed to warm up and then chilled again).

Yes perhaps. My local store is selling more US beers, or at least trying. It looks like they are not selling very well since they are always on sale (1 euro a bottle) because they are close to the expiration date. I guess the importer is promoting the beer pretty heavily. I guess the are not really willing to pay more for foreign beers. It's most local + belgium beer even no german beers
When the flying dog beers are on sale I'll get a few.

21st Amendment IPA = really delicious. I am not generally a big fan of IPAs but this one tastes citrusy and fruity and doesn't have that crazy pine/gin taste that so many of the american hop bombs have, plus it's in cans! Good times!
