this mix is awesome. some serious back-of-the-station-wagon-on-the-way-to-the-barnstable-county-fair-in-1980 moods popping into my head

you can just hear the neuman sound on so many of these too .. why that production sound went away i don't understand

Hey thanks for listening.

Brian you totally must have had similar exposure to this weird stuff. I mean, you can hear it on any AM or soft rock station, but some of them just floor me still.

I can see this fitting in at a Wianno Ave or 6A cocktail party in the early 80's.

yeah i could rattle off a huge list of things that pop in my head from these songs .. so many distinct images, times, feelings

very melancholy how much comes flooding in, but good. it's so weird how the strength of older songs is reborn later, under the context of a different time. they go from being good, to being dated and packed away, to being good again, if not better than ever.

reminds me of:

"Thirty years ago, before I practiced [Zen], I saw that mountains are mountains and rivers are rivers. However, after having achieved intimate knowledge and having gotten a way in, I saw that mountains are not mountains and rivers are not rivers. But now that I have found rest, as before, I see mountains as mountains and rivers as rivers."

this mix is hot!

i've heard that AOR is the latest fad in helsinki music scene. it's fun how you guys can vibe off the whole yacht rock thing being from a rich coastal area in USA while for us it's just imagined fragments of "ameriikan meininki".

Haha glad you dig that selection! I think we must have had similar exposure to some of these tunes when we were young. The other ones just seemed to match the vibe.

That picture is really cute, you guys look so happy. There's something about the summers in the 70s and early 80s in this area are just stamped in my brain as awesome. Maybe it's just being a kid, but I think it was a really cool time.

I think a giant percentage of my music could be either categorized as gay, or the artist is actually gay. But I think a lot of people equate that soft rock sound with being gay. I have no sensor for that at all after I was like 20 and let go of phobias when it comes to music. I think music in general is pretty gay! As a house music DJ you get that a ton.

If you think of the actual gay artists it's kinda funny to look at sporting events and realize the biggest singalong anthem is by gay artist Queen - We Are The Champions. All these homophobe jocks singing right along with Freddie Mercury. He must have got a kick out of that.

Glad you guys half knowingly agree that gay stuff rocks!

Now featured on mix of the week! Can't believe this mix is almost three years old already.

It definitely took me a while to start feeling this overall sound. Helsinki heads throwing "AOR" parties and Danny Wang helped (the latter regarding Andy Gibb specificly).

Great stuff Ivan, pumping it right now.

Cool man, thanks for checking and sharing. I had never heard of "AOR" until you mentioned it. It was really just some warm and vibey (nostalgic I guess) tunes. There was a lot of selection time to make sure it flowed together, but just tunes I liked and some that I remembered.

I'm sure most of the guys (well Brian at least) remembers hearing all this stuff as kids in the 70s and then later on like soft rock radio or piped into stores. In my experience stuff like this and Steve Miller and other classic rock was absorbed in a different way back then as a kid. I remember times watching adults, maybe drinking wine at the beach and acting adult cool, or some hot teens tearing off in a dangerous convertible blaring Steve Miller, or my babysitter bragging about being a Jonh Denver tour groupie... there's this thick rich memory that goes with the sounds and I feel like I get it more now as an adult. I can also see why the witty 80s came in with a roll of bright colors and loud movies and buried the sexy cool 70s. haha I'm ramblin on this one.

Great read Ivan.

My parents (dad especially) were more Neil Young and "hard rock" than this sound. "AOR" is just a label thrown around here because there has to be some word to call stuff. Helsinki is pretty good with coming up this type of names, "boogie" is a real genre here even though it might not have a lot of origins in the NYC of the 80's or the states in general.

Anyway, I'm happy I have discovered this great stuff. Matches my deejay burnout vibe perfectly, too. :)
